50 Years and Still Growing...
As well as being the year that the very first Mini rolled off the production line, 1959 was also a very noteworthy year for gardening and horticulture. It saw the foundation of the watering specialist company Hozelock, the inauguration of the very first Spalding Tulip Parade and the formation of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS).
Most auspicially for us here at Woodcote Green Garden Centre and Nurseries however, it was in 1959 that Lawrence Newton planted the first crops on his newly acquired land at Woodmansterne Lane and Woodcote Green opened it’s doors for the first time.
At the time, Percy Thrower was rapidly becoming a household name. The post war housing boom led to householders investing time and money in their gardens and both TV and radio programmes reflected this by devoting more airtime to gardening programmes. Growing food for the family became more commonplace and a growing awareness of environmental issues in turn drove an increasing demand for nursery stock.
And by a remarkable coincidence, it was also the year that our Managing Director Chris Milan
was born.
It’s a very special 50th birthday celebration this year and we’d like you to help us celebrate.
